3 Reasons A Follow-Up Procedure May Be Necessary After Breast Augmentation

Women considering breast implants have the notion that they’ll need to replace their implants every 10 years. This is due in large part to a 2011 report by the FDA on the safety of silicone implants that noted one out of five patients needed a replacement or revision after 10 years. If you look at those numbers carefully, it should put your mind at ease rather than causing alarm. Yes, it is true that one in five women may need another procedure, but that also means four in five are still enjoying the benefits of their implants a decade after receiving them.

And those additional procedures aren’t always due to deflation or a rupture of the implant. Many revisions are by choice, when women decide they want to change their size or have further refinement.

Reasons For A Follow-Up Procedure

Below are three of the reasons a follow up procedure may be necessary after receiving breast implants. When contemplating this surgery, it is crucial to consider these factors. 1. Breast implant rupture or deflation: If it does occur, a revision will be necessary.
2. Development of capsule contracture: If the scar tissue that forms around your breast hardens it may cause pain, change position and/or shape of your breasts. In these instances, another procedure can alleviate the issue.
3. Dissatisfaction with initial results, or a desired change in breast size: I have worked with numerous patients who were unhappy with their previous outcomes, as well as women who decided a change in breast size was in order well after their initial procedure.

Start by confirming that your surgeon is board certified – not by just any board, but by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. This indicates that the surgeon has gone through rigorous training, extensive examination and maintenance of expertise. This training takes years, and maintaining expertise requires time, so a cost-cutting shortcut is to skip all that training and testing and to just take a weekend course. To figure this out, simply look up the surgeon you are considering on the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) website. All members of ASPS are certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and are in good standing.
