Upper Blepharoplasty

As we age, our eyelids can begin to sag and droop, giving us a tired or even haggard appearance. Upper blepharoplasty, also known as an eyelid lift, is a surgical procedure that can help to correct these signs of aging.

During an upper blepharoplasty, Dr. Lugo will make incisions along the natural crease lines of your eyelids. She will then remove excess skin, fat, and muscle from the eyelids. This can help to open up your eyes and give you a more youthful appearance.

Upper blepharoplasty is a relatively common procedure that is performed under local anesthesia. It typically takes about two hours to complete. Most patients experience some bruising and swelling after surgery, but this usually resolves within a few weeks.

If you are considering an upper blepharoplasty in Georgia, Dr. Lugo can help you to determine if you are a good candidate for the procedure. She will discuss your goals and expectations, and she will create a treatment plan that is right for you.

Benefits of Upper Blepharoplasty

  • Improved appearance: Upper blepharoplasty can help to reduce the appearance of sagging eyelids. This can give you a more youthful and refreshed appearance.
  • Improved vision: In some cases, upper blepharoplasty can improve vision by removing excess skin that is blocking the field of vision.
  • Increased self-confidence: Many people who undergo upper blepharoplasty report feeling more confident and self-assured after the procedure.

Lower Blepharoplasty Surgery

A lower blepharoplasty reduces under-eye bags and puffiness or fluid build up that can form below your eyes for a multitude of reasons. The lower eyelid can face several aesthetic issues and so Dr. Lugo will alter the approach depending on the concerns the under-eye faces. The incision is usually just below the lash line or inside the lower eyelid.  Dr. Lugo will then reposition the muscles and remove fat from the under-eye area. She  will also tighten loose skin. The procedure varies from patient to patient, depending on their preferences and the complexity of the concern. The type of anesthesia used will depend on your preferences, suitability and the preferred surgical technique.

The surgery technique will depend on the concerns.  Dr.  Lugo will usually make an incision along the lash line for a lower bleph, and within the crease of the upper eyelid for an upper bleph.   She will remove excess skin, and excise some of the muscle, and may reposition the fat and tissues.

To treat the lower eyelid, an incision can be made either on the inside of the eyelid (transconjunctival) or on the outside (transcutaneous). The advantage of the inside incision is that the scar is better concealed but if there is excess skin, this cannot be treated. The outside incision allows access to any of the structures of the eyelid but does result in an external scar. Through either incision, the fat pads of the eyelids can be removed or repositioned to treat bags and provide a more youthful, smooth transition from the lower eyelid to the cheek.  Although both upper blepharoplasty and transcutaneous lower blepharoplasty result in scars, these usually heal very well. When the incision is placed on the inside of the lower eyelid, the scar is invisible.

Blepharoplasty FAQs

  • What is a blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure that removes excess skin and fat from the eyelids to rejuvenate the appearance of the eyes. This procedure can be performed on the upper and/or lower eyelids to improve the appearance of sagging, drooping, or puffy eyelids.

  • How long does a blepharoplasty take?

The duration of a blepharoplasty procedure depends on the extent of the surgery and whether it is performed on the upper or lower eyelids, or both. For example, on average, an upper blepharoplasty takes about 1-2 hours to complete and it can be done under local anesthesia.

  • Am I a good candidate for a blepharoplasty?

Good candidates for blepharoplasty are individuals who have excess skin or fat on their eyelids, causing a tired or aged appearance. Ideal candidates should be in good health, have realistic expectations, and not have any eye conditions that could affect healing.

  • Will a blepharoplasty get rid of my dark circles?

Blepharoplasty can help reduce the appearance of dark circles if they are caused for example by bags on the lower eyelids that are casting shadows. However, if dark circles are caused by other factors, such as genetics or allergies, additional treatments may be necessary.

  • How much does a blepharoplasty cost?

At Lugo Plastic Surgery, we offer personalized consultations to determine an accurate estimate of the cost. The average price for upper eyelids is around $3500, lower eyelids is $4700, and if you do all four lids the costs would be around $7200.

  • What is the recovery time for a blepharoplasty?

Most patients can return to work and other normal activities within 1-2 weeks after a blepharoplasty, but the full recovery time can vary depending on the extent of the procedure. Patients may experience swelling, bruising, and mild discomfort during the recovery period.

  • How long do the results of a blepharoplasty last?

The results of a blepharoplasty can be long-lasting, but they can be affected by the natural aging process and lifestyle factors such as smoking or excessive sun exposure. Patients can help maintain their results by following a healthy lifestyle and skincare regimen.

  • Will I have scars after a blepharoplasty?

The incisions made during a blepharoplasty are typically hidden within the natural folds of the eyelids, so any scarring is usually minimal and barely visible.

  • Are there any risks or complications associated with a blepharoplasty?

As with any surgical procedure, there are potential risks and complications associated with a blepharoplasty, such as infection, bleeding, or changes in vision. However, these risks can be minimized by choosing a board-certified plastic surgeon and following post-operative instructions carefully.

  • Can a blepharoplasty be combined with other procedures, such as a brow lift or facelift?

Yes, a blepharoplasty can be combined with other procedures to achieve a more comprehensive rejuvenation of the face. During a consultation, Dr. Lugo can recommend the best treatment plan to meet each patient's unique needs and goals.
